Keep It Green: Tips for Naturally Deep Cleaning Your Carpet This Spring

Category: Carpet Cleaning

It’s spring. Everything is green again and, when cleaning, you want your home to be as fresh as possible, especially your carpet.

Keeping your home beautiful this time of year doesn’t have to be a challenge. Your carpeting may look a shade or two darker than last year, but not to worry.

A little green cleaning can transform those cheerless chunks of slush-and-sand-laden carpet back into pleasant places to look at once again.

So where do you start?

Vacuum Often
Creative avoidance may kick in when you remember it’s time to vacuum. Thinking of how much money this small discipline can save you over the lifetime of your carpet may spur you on.

You don’t need to be thorough and detailed every time, but it is important to pay special attention to high traffic areas to avoid premature wear-and-tear on carpet fibers. Try to hit these spots twice a week, if possible, but at least once.

Remove Stains
No need to resort to chemicals to remove stains that aren’t thoroughly removed immediately. Instead of using Shout or OxiClean, try these methods to help you save time and money while improving your home’s indoor air quality.

Freshen Up
Between deep cleans, maintain freshness in your carpet with this recipe:

Mix the below ingredients in a shaker that can be easily stored:

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 10-20 drops of lavender essential oil (or your favorite)
  • Optional: Add a half cup of borax to repel fleas if you have pets.

Sprinkle a light amount of this mix onto your carpet before vacuuming. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before you begin. (Try not to do this on damp or rainy days.  Humidity may make the borax clump.)

Will these quick tips turn you into a green cleaning machine that will never stop? Probably not, but we hope they inspire you to remember these three easy steps when you want to lift your family’s spirits while they remove dirt from your carpet.
