Restoring Your Home After a Disaster

Category: Uncategorized

If you have ever been involved in a house fire or flood, you know the real work begins after the fire is put out or the leak is repaired. It can be a truly daunting and overwhelming experience that leaves you wanting to just get away. It does not have to be as overwhelming as it may seem. As long as the tasks at hand are properly delegated and handled one at a time, you can repair the issues and go back to life as usual.

Causes of Damage

Your home may become damaged by any number of issues. You may experience water damage from many causes. A broken pipe can lead to indoor flooding. An extremely heavy rainfall or hurricane can lead to water getting into the home. Pump malfunctions, sewer and septic failures, and even ice dam leaks can all cause serious damage to your home. You may also experience small appliance fires, which can leave smoke and fire damage in its wake. These all can wreak havoc on your home: carpets need to be replaced, drywall needs to be restored, and structures need to be repaired. To look at it as one large obstacle is surely overwhelming and scary.

Steps to Restoration

Once the smoke has cleared, you need to take action. The first thing you should do is call your agent. Determine whether the damage is covered by insurance, or if making a claim is even a good idea. If so, make sure to do your research on more than one company, as homeowners are able to choose a restoration company even if it was not provided by their insurance company. When you have chosen your restoration company, ask for copies of their license and insurance. These can be helpful to supply to your insurance provider in the event an issue should arise.

The next step is to let the restoration begin. This process may take a bit of time. You must be prepared to stay in another environment, such as a hotel or an apartment, while the process occurs. Many times, when disaster causes the loss of use of your home, your insurance will cover the cost of your hotel stay during the restoration process. Just know that once it is complete, your home will look like new and be ready for you to move back in and resume life as normal.
